Producing for Others – Filter

I started producing when I was about 15 years old. I may tell this story later, but I thought I wanted to be an EDM rapper, but I recorded my voice once, and realized I wasn’t meant for that at all.

But I loved the process of trying to recreate the beat and making the music. So I decided that I would just try and recreate cover songs and beats for my singer and rapper friends in high school. I’d use all the free sounds and plugins on GarageBand and make what were honestly terrible approximations of the original songs, but I loved doing it.

I did that for a while until I had two friends say that they wanted to create some original music and wanted me to make the tracks. I remember thinking, “Awesome! We’ll get to do what we love, but make something with our names on it instead.” And I ran to my bedroom and started creating, texting my friends, and asking them about specifics of the sounds and the vibe of the songs that they were working to create.

But there was a problem

I had never produced for an artist before, so I was just taking their suggestions and making something that I was going to be happy with, but I put no thought into creating something that would have room for vocals and lyrics. So I put layer upon layer of music and synths and drums and sound FX, and synth solos. All things that make no sense in a song with a vocalist, all because I didn’t know what I was doing.

The result: Two fully produced tracks that neither artist could do anything with. After several rounds of edits, and being busy teenagers, we all just sort of gave up on the tracks. I was disappointed, but I didn’t wanna lose the work, so I decided to complete them and clean them up to be original tracks.

The first was released on Bad with Titles, and it’s called Major, and was the first real composition of mine I decided to release. The next is ironically called Filter. To be released on Bad with Titles II.

I titled the song Filter because I learned how to creatively filter out my ideas, and I don’t consider myself creative in any other aspect, so I named it after an effect I put on part of the drums. Ha Ha

Be on the lookout for a snippet of Filter and be ready for Filter when Bad With Titles II comes out.
